Glasgow City Council, GB minimizes flood impacts and frees land for development with Smart Canal
Glasgow City Council, GB Smart Canal Flood Development
City officials worked with Scottish Canals and Scottish Water to incorporate mitigation technology into the Forth & Clyde Canal. A smart water platform anticipates high risks for flooding based on water levels and weather forecasts. Canal water is released into surrounding drainage ponds and channels ahead of downpours, thus creating 55,000 cubic meters of extra capacity. The European-first project opens 110 hectares of frequently flooded land for residential and commercial development.
