Holdfast Bay, SA initiates suburban food waste collection trial to lessen landfill contributions

Holdfast Bay, SA Suburban Food Waste Collection Trial

Complete

The council selected 1,000 households across four suburbs to participate in the year-long trial. Each household receives a weekly collection of their food and organic waste bin. Council officials switched applicable households to biweekly general waste collections during the pilot. Holdfast Bay supplied participation bin stickers, compostable bags, and program guides at the outset. The collected waste is converted into fertilizer for local farms rather than added to the landfill.

Starting 21 September 2020, in a South Australian first, we’re trialing a voluntary change to kerbside bin collections, designed to divert food waste away from landfill. The 12-month voluntary trial involves switching the collection frequency of Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) green bins to weekly, and red landfill bins to fortnightly, to make recycling food waste more convenient. Placing all your food and garden waste in the FOGO bin reduces waste sent to landfill. It provides our South Australian food growers with nutrient rich compost, creates jobs and reduces landfill fees. This a 12 month trial begins 21 September 2020 through to 8 September 2021.
