London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, GB lets highway verges grow wild for improved biodiversity
London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, GB Highway Verges
In Progress
The borough typically mows highway verges every three weeks during the growing season. This pilot divides verges into urban highway, rural highway, and conservation highway categories. Urban highway verges are cut monthly and rural highway verges are mowed three times per year. Conservation highway verges are maintained once prior to the arrival of winter. Council leaders hope wild verges reduce personnel needs and emissions from landscaping.
