The city of Mechelen partnered with Ecoso to open a food hub to reduce waste and prices for residents. The food hub provides a location for the city, organizations, and companies to develop food solutions. Ecoso opened a social grocer in the food hub where shoppers with a limited budget can purchase cheaper food. The affordable food is obtained from fresh food surplus auctions or taken off supermarket shelves because it has almost reached its best-before date.
