The city is swapping manual reading of more than 44,000 water meters with an Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI). Smart meters transmit consumption data to the utility office over wireless connections. Santa Ana residents track real-time water usage with a dedicated app. City officials tout more accurate billing and improved repair times through AMI data. The Smart Water Meter Program will be implemented citywide by 2022.
