Waikato District Council, NZ works with Watercare on data-based approach to water conservation

Waikato District Council, NZ Data-Based Water Conservation

Complete

Council officials and the utility previously used a uniform approach to water management each summer. The new approach compared daily consumption in each service zone with average consumption over the previous three days. Watercare alerted the council when water plants reached 80% of production capacity, thus triggering conservation measures. Waikato District Council used localized data for improved transparency on water supply and demand as well as targeted communications.

Data-based approach means fewer water restrictions in Waikato

For the first time in many years, communities in many parts of Waikato have had a summer free of water restrictions, despite it being as hot and dry as ever. This is thanks to a new insights-based, collaborative approach to manage demand in the Waikato District, achieved through Council partnership with Watercare.

Project Succeeded

Waikato District Council reported the fewest number of water restrictions in recent summers due to data-driven decision-making.
