Boise City Hall planned a $52,000 investment in facial recognition software to improve security by identifying individuals banned from entering the premises. The city signed a $31,000 contract with CompuNet and was going to spend $21,000 building a server to house the program.

Boise City Hall has pulled the plug on a $52,000 plan to use facial recognition at city offices but one city leader says a "real security problem" still exists. A spokesman for Mayor David Bieter Monday would not comment further than the press release issued late Friday afternoon.

Room for Improvement

Boise Mayor Dave Bieter pulled the plug and the plan was overhauled after concerns were raised about the technology’s ethics and efficacy. Other cities have already banned the software and a federal bill banning the use of facial recognition in public buildings was recently proposed.
