The Los Angeles City Council approved an ordinance to revitalize and modernize the taxi industry to compete with Uber and Lyft by overhauling the city-regulated franchise system. The ordinance granted ride-hailing applications access to traffic and other city data in order to make dispatching riders more efficient. The ordinance also reduced cosmetic requirements for taxis to a simple decal and removed the cap on the number of authorized cabs with 10-year permits.
