South Somerset District Council, GB partners with Zwings on an e-scooter pilot in Yeovil

South Somerset District Council, GB Zwings E-Scooter Pilot

In Progress

The council selected Zwings from 16 applicants for the one-year pilot. A fleet of up to 200 e-scooters was available for hire from virtual parking zones. Zwings used 100% renewable energy when recharging e-scooters and an electric van for its trips around Yeovil. South Somerset pursued the project as part of the national Department for Transport's effort at reinvigorating town centers through active travel.

Launching e-scooter trials in South Somerset | Local Government Association

In 2020 South Somerset District Council (SSDC) signed up to the call out by the Department for Transport (DfT) asking for councils to take part in their e-scooter trial for 12 months.

Project Succeeded

The e-scooter trial was extended to November 2022 and May 2024 due to its popularity. Rider surveys found that 30% of e-scooter trips replaced vehicle trips, thus replacing 67,000 kilometers of car use over two years.
