Greater Manchester Combined Authority, GB develops a 5G SMART Decarbonisation Network
Local officials are kicking off the 5G SDN by connecting air-source heat pumps in social housing to a single network. This integration is the first step toward smart grids with remote monitoring and management of environmental conditions. Manchester will also conduct a digital road pilot involving smart stoplight prioritization and public transit routing. The 5G SDN - supported by £3 million in 5G Innovation Regions funding - will expand to functions like mold detection and virtual health.

Bellevue, WA collaborates with T-Mobile on a Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything technology pilot
T-Mobile's C-V2X prototype communicates real-time traffic conditions between traffic lights and vehicles. The system uses 5G connectivity for continuous communications with minimal delays. A mobile app for the pilot activates audio and visual alerts when the user's vehicle approaches potentially dangerous situations. Bellevue and T-Mobile selected mid-block crosswalks, school zones, and reduced-speed zones to test C-V2X's impacts on road safety.

Meath County Council, IE works with Trilateral Research on hyperlocal air quality monitoring in Trim
Air quality data from sensors throughout the town are fed into Trilateral's STRIAD platform. Trim residents can keep track of local air quality trends through a public dashboard. STRIAD also produces insights on the long-term health impacts of air quality for local decision-makers. Trilateral's team of data scientists, ethicists, and engineers produces multi-dimensional analytics. County officials hope localized data increases public support for air quality efforts.

Wellington City Council, NZ becomes the first city in New Zealand to use VivaCity traffic sensors
Eighteen VivaCity traffic-counting sensors were installed at 13 intersections to kick off the five-year project. Pole-mounted sensors gather and anonymize traffic data for categorization by transport method. The network also monitors traffic speed and congestion for ongoing analysis of local road conditions. Wellington will use long-term sensor data to inform decisions about the local bike network, event management, and behavioral change initiatives.

Queenstown-Lakes District Council, NZ trials environmental sensors in recreational reserves
The Ben Lomond and Mount Iron reserves each received five Attentis pole-mounted sensors. The sensors gather around-the-clock measurements of pollen, air quality, soil moisture, and structural movement. Reserve patrons can plan their trips by checking data on a mobile app. Thermal images are sent via the Spark NZ network to emergency personnel for early detection of wildfires. Council officials will evaluate the technology's effectiveness during a summer pilot.

Phoenix, AZ deploys Sensor Industries devices for its toilet leak detection pilot program
City officials identified leaky toilets as a leading source of water loss in Phoenix. The pilot adds SI-Toilet sensors to restrooms in select city facilities, businesses, and college residence halls. SI-Toilet sends real-time leak alerts to maintenance staff for repairs and SI-Dash for system-wide monitoring. Leak detection technology is part of a Sustainable Desert Development Policy including drought-tolerant planting, improved irrigation, and efficiency checkups.

Kingston upon Hull City Council, GB turns Stoneferry Road into a smart transportation corridor
City officials worked with Clearview Intelligence on solutions to cycling safety and infrastructure concerns. Road studs at five intersections detect passing cyclists and inform motorists using in-road lights. An over-height detection system turns sensor data into digital sign directions for freight vehicles approaching a low bridge. The partnership also yielded a Variable Message Sign network at 18 locations with real-time travel times and detours.

London Borough of Redbridge, GB installs map16 IOT drain sensors for improved flood monitoring
One hundred drains on streets with high flood risks were outfitted with sensors. Three sensors were also installed on Seven Kings Water River for river level monitoring. The Gully Sensor sends alerts to council personnel based on real-time data on water levels and grate status. The sensor network feeds into a dashboard for visualizations of current drainage. Borough officials benefit from map16's predictive analytics including best-case and worst-case scenarios for weather events.

Oakland, CA relies on artificial intelligence for early wildlfire detections during N5 Sensors pilot
Ten ChemNodes installed throughout the city gather data on air quality, particulates, and temperature. An AI-enabled platform evaluates potential threats up to two miles away and alerts the Oakland Fire Department of wildfires by text or email. ChemNodes don't require direct cellular connections and store enough solar energy for up to 10 days of operation. The two-year pilot will test response times during fires while gathering data for targeted fire prevention measures.
