Cairns, QLD educates young residents about pet ownership with Getting To Know Your Dog games

The suite of five online games teaches kids aged 5 to 11 how to interact with dogs. A matching game called Doggo Cards identifies human behaviors comparable to common dog postures. Bug Buster asks players to find hidden fleas and ticks in a virtual dog's fur. Additional games explain how to identify household hazards and develop bonds with pets. Council officials worked with CQUniversity students on the games' development.

Bridgend County Borough Council, GB addresses period poverty with menstrual product subscriptions

Borough officials sought a sustainable solution to the lack of period product access in schools and public places. Residents aged 24 and under can request free subscriptions through council partner Grace & Green. Subscription boxes can be delivered to home addresses or picked up at local collection points. The company also maintains stands with free products in select locations. Grace & Green products are organic and biodegradable for lower impacts on the environment than plastic products.

Armidale Regional, NSW Girls in Civil initiative encourages construction workforce diversity

The three-week program shows entry points into the civil construction industry for female high school students. Participants learn about the industry and employment opportunities from construction experts. Girls in Civil includes visits to local construction sites, equipment demonstrations, and presentations by experienced professionals. Armidale and Training Services NSW hope participants are empowered to work in the male-dominated construction industry.

Orange County, FL helps domestic violence victims leave unsafe situations with child care pilot

Orange County identified childcare costs as an obstacle to residents leaving abusive environments. The two-year pilot uses $1 million in county funds to offset the costs of child care for domestic violence victims. Local member organizations in the Community Coordinated Care for Children identify and refer victims with children to childcare providers. The county's Neighborhood Centers for Families provide counseling, health services, and skills training to further assist participants.

San Diego, CA uses TOOTRiS software in support of expanded childcare benefits for city employees

San Diego's Municipal Child Care Benefit Pilot offers participants up to $1,000 monthly for childcare costs. Eligible city employees earn less than $95,350 per year as full-time employees or part-time employees who also pursue higher education. The TOOTRiS platform will be used for childcare scheduling and the disbursement of pilot benefits. City officials are using the pilot to determine how best to serve thousands of employees facing rising childcare costs.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, GB digitizes care plan auditing with Invision360 EHCP tool

The borough's Children's Services team used manual processes for writing and auditing past Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Invision360's EHCP Tool converted a paper-based process into a digital one in 10 weeks. Council staff can collaborate across departments on effective EHCPs for 1,700 children with multi-faceted needs. Adopting the EHCP Tool resulted in uniform plan design, new insights about plan outcomes, and simplified quality assurance.

Cook County, IL pilots lead service line replacement program for home-based child carers

Cook County and Elevate will help 550 care providers follow county lead testing and mitigation standards. The one-year pilot uses federal ARPA funding for free replacements by approved plumbers. Journey.do combines self-assessments, skill building, and sharing exercises designed for youth enrichment. Boulder County, CO Young Leaders Academy boosts youth entrepreneurship and job prospects

The six-month academy was designed to counter educational and career disruptions caused by COVID-19. Eligible participants were aged 16 to 24 and identified as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color. Students completed six weeks of skill-building workshops with $500 incentives for attending 80% of sessions. Participants selected from paid internship, certification, or high school equivalency diploma tracks. Boulder County used federal ARPA funds to recruit partners and pay $6,000 stipends.
