Fairfax County, VA introduces the RescueVision platform for Fire and Rescue service management
This GIS-powered tool provides a single resource for the Fire and Rescue Department to monitor emergency resources. Real-time service coverage maps show where fire engines, trucks, and transports are deployed throughout the county. A Mutual Aid Coverage map informs users of areas served by municipalities and neighboring counties. RescueVision also provides updates on units out of service, transports at hospitals, and dispatch discrepancies.

Fairfax County, VA simplifies search for retail food inspection reports with new mapping tool
The interactive map tracks health inspections of more than 3,500 permitted eateries. Users can search by restaurant name or open pinpoints from the map interface. The Retail Food Inspection Report app presents the last two years of reports for each location as downloadable PDFs. Fairfax County leveraged existing GIS tools for increased transparency of work done by the Environmental Health team. This map also improves customer service by eliminating FOIA requests for inspection records.

Fairfax County, VA repurposes narcotic-sniffing dogs to detect weapons after cannabis legalization
The Fairfax County Police Department is retiring and retraining narcotic-sniffing dogs after the legalization of cannabis in the Commonwealth. These marijuana-sniffing K-9 units will be repurposed to detect weapons and shell casings in order to improve public safety by reducing gun violence. Through this new four-week program, the dogs are receiving odor imprinting training to recognize when a gun has been fired.

The Virtual Assistant provides answers to a broad spectrum of resident questions. Chatbot users find suggested topics common to local residents including voting, budgets, and COVID-19. The program also responds to keywords and questions with information, links, and contacts. Fairfax County's customer service and development teams regularly add new knowledge areas to the assistant. The AI-enabled assistant also learns how to improve future responses from past interactions.
