Herning, DK Green Bicycles program turns abandoned bike nuisance into learning opportunities
Local officials estimate that up to 200 bikes are found abandoned each year. Green Bicycles - Grønne Cykler - takes this task off the hands of local police by repurposing collected bikes. Students at Ungdomscenter Knudmosen repair and refurbish bikes in the youth center's new workshop. Herning distributes the restored bikes to local nonprofits for free use by their clients. The project creates training opportunities for local youth and free transit options for residents in need.

Visitors to any municipal webpage find the Climate-Friendly Display button in the top-right corner. This first-in-Denmark feature switches page contents from color to gray and hides data-heavy content like maps when activated. The Climate-Friendly Display also uses a common font from the most popular browsers to prevent unnecessary data downloads. Municipal officials anticipate up to 70% in emission reductions for each visit through reduced energy consumption.

Municipal officials pursued this partnership to increase the competitiveness of local metal producers on the global market. Danks AM Hub Herning hosts 3D printer training sessions for business owners and designers in the Jutland region. Manufacturers can take printers on loan for in-house experiences of the technology. The hub encourages information sharing among companies as they learn more about 3D printing.
