Macedon Ranges and the Australian Food & Grocery Council partnered on the one-year program for 2,246 households. Participants gather bubble wrap, food wrappers, and other eligible materials into orange bags provided by the council. Orange bags are placed in the yellow recycling bin for collection every other week with materials sent to a regional processing plant for recycling. Project leaders are monitoring collection volumes and user experiences for potential expansion to other communities.

Macedon Ranges approved an AUD 110,000 fund to cover vouchers for business services. Local businesses were eligible for up to two AUD 1,000 vouchers redeemable at council-approved vendors. Entrepreneurs benefitted from free or heavily discounted accounting, business planning, and marketing services as the economy struggled during COVID-19. The program also fostered business relationships and increased demand for service providers impacted by the pandemic.

Local farmers and land managers receive free on-farm advice on regenerative agricultural practices. A short course on holistic grazing management centers attention on the health of the soil, water, and livestock. Macedon Ranges worked with Greater Bendigo and Hepburn councils to support 875 participants during the program's first year.

Macedon Ranges, VIC produces braille stickers for waste and recycling bins
Visually impaired residents provided feedback about the difficulties of differentiating council bins. Council leaders and Vision Australia designed the braille stickers to ensure proper use of the four-bin system introduced in 2020. Each sticker set includes labels for the glass-only, organic, recycling, and general waste bins along with the organic kitchen caddy. Residents can call the council's customer service line to request stickers for free.
