Medicine Hat, AB Project Clear Horizon opens carbon sequestration capacity for local industries
Project Clear Horizon is a Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) facility planned for a 2027 opening. Carbon dioxide produced by energy companies and manufacturers would be injected into the pore spaces deep below the surface level. Medicine Hat plans an open CCUS so that emitters of all sizes could contribute to carbon emission reductions. City officials project an annual processing capacity of three million tons, thus contributing to a 2050 national net-zero goal.

Medicine Hat, AB Adopt-a-Tree Program seeks community help with roadside tree care
City officials identified 2,400 public trees in difficult environmental conditions with limited water supplies. The Adopt-a-Tree Program recruited 200 volunteers to water public trees on nearby sidewalks and medians. Participants were eligible for free water bags or discounted soaker hoses and rain barrels necessary for weekly waterings through September 2022. Parks officials provided guidance on optimal water amounts based on assigned tree sizes and ages.

The City of Medicine Hat developed the "Scratch & Win" program to reward rebates to residential utility customers for purchasing and installing energy efficient items in their homes. Customers can win up to $100 back on the purchase of eligible items including programmable thermostats, LED lightbulbs, solar lights, etc. After participants submit an application for the rebate, a Council staff member scratches a lottery-style ticket and applies the winning credit to their utility account.
