A one-year pilot will determine the viability of geothermal energy use by homes and businesses near the Stadium of Light. The test area includes the Wearmouth Colliery mine closed in 1993. Two boreholes drilled into the mine provide access to naturally heated water for potential use in heating and cooling networks. Sunderland City Council received $2.2 million from the Green Heat Networks Fund Transition Scheme in its continued efforts at carbon-neutral operations.

Sunderland City Council, GB improves timeliness of winter road treatments with new sensors
The city's Winter Maintenance team receives real-time data on road conditions from 10 infrared sensors. Each sensor gathers air temperature, surface temperature, and dew points at a heavily used road. This sensor network uses a BAI Communications wireless network for reliable data transmission. Council officials combine forecasts from DTN Roadmaster with weather station and sensor data when deciding on road treatments in winter.

Sunderland City Council, GB experiments with smart public bins for improved waste management
Solar-powered bins were installed for a pilot running through September 2022. Smart bins create five times the capacity of standard bins with the help of automated compactors. Compacted waste is deposited into wheeled containers for easy retrieval. Internal sensors gather data on how often and when bins are used for analyses of optimal collection schedules. Sunderland and BAI Communications are also evaluating how the sensor technology can be applied to other facets of city life.

The six-week accelerator guides 10 UK-based startups focused on 5G and IoT solutions. Selected startups each receive up to £10,000 in grants for product development and testing. The IoT & 5G Accelerator offers mentoring sessions with experienced entrepreneurs and pitch development workshops. A final showcase allows participants to meet with prospective partners and customers. City officials developed the accelerator with BAI Communications and Sunderland Software City.

Sunderland City Council, GB takes next steps in 5G CAL pilot with Terberg autonomous vehicle pilot
5G Connected Automated Logistics (5G CAL) is a city-led autonomous delivery pilot involving a regional Nissan plant and local suppliers. An all-electric Terberg YT202 is outfitted with a StreetDrone system of sensors and cameras needed for autonomous operation. The initial 5G CAL trial will determine how the YT202 handles security gates, roundabouts, and other features. City officials and their project partners are aiming for an emissions-free logistics system enabled by 5G connectivity.

Sunderland City Council, GB partners with BAI Communications to develop high-speed 5G network
Sunderland City Council entered into a 20-year strategic partnership with BAI Communications with the goal of becoming the most advanced smart city in the United Kingdom. According to the agreement, BAI Communications will design, build, and operate a 5G cellular network to stimulate economic growth, reduce the digital divide, and create over 100 local jobs. The resulting high-speed 5G mobile connectivity will allow the Council to deliver transformative digital services for the community.
