Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council, GB augments District Energy Network with heated mine water
Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council, GB Mine Water Energy
Council-run Gateshead Energy Company has supplied 5,000 homes with gas-powered heat through the DEN since 2018. A collaboration with The Coal Authority will supplant 50% of gas heat with heat energy from mine water 150 meters below the surface. This process transfers zero-emission energy from long-closed mines to the network using boreholes and a heat exchanger. This is the largest project of its kind in the United Kingdom and advances the council's Zero Carbon Heat Strategy.
