The borough approved the nine-month pilot in response to a shortage of licensed drivers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Earn as you Learn trainees receive extended time and council support for required topographical assessments of local streets. Participants who pass criminal background checks and driving assessments can work for private taxi companies before full licensure. The Licensing Committee and the Taxi and Private Hire Forum will evaluate results for a potential extension of the pilot.

Borough officials worked with Novoville to customize the company's app for the Our Community Befriending Service. Socially isolated residents are automatically connected to volunteers based on requester location, needs, and interests. GetVolunteering logs befriending team activities including social calls, grocery deliveries, and food bank service. The app allows volunteers to alert the borough to residents with worsening health conditions for service referrals.

The council selected 100 properties across five streets for the six-week pilot. A project team collects food waste from council-supplied bins on weekly pickup dates. Basildon Borough Council uses participant surveys plus data gathered with each collection to inform future iterations of the program. This pilot is part of the borough's effort to comply with a national mandate for dedicated food waste collection by 2023.

Basildon and Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council first worked with SWARCO to install chargers on the Southend Arterial Road. The most recent project added five rapid chargers to Basildon car parks including three dedicated to taxis. Rochdale incorporated eight chargers into four car parks including six fast chargers. Council leaders are focusing on EV adoption among taxi drivers in their efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

The Inclusive Basildon Borough Project began with resident surveys and access audits of central district businesses. A five-tiered accreditation program educates participating businesses on how to improve services to disabled patrons. Basildon is conducting a pilot of the WelcoMe app among select businesses. This app allows customers to request specific accommodations and communicate with staff prior to their shopping trips.

The app maintains a two-week calendar of waste and recycling collection dates. Our Street Basildon users can request special collections or replacement bins.
