Sonoma County, CA deploys bus stop signage with e-paper displays for improved commuter experiences
County officials sought low-cost, low-maintenance electrical signage for its transit stops. E-paper displays from Vix Technology were deployed at urban and rural stops throughout Sonoma County. Each sign presents routes served at the stop with arrival times updated by 4G and 5G LTE networks. Lithium-ion batteries provide three years of continuous power without the need for utility connections. This technology was approximately half the cost of previously used LCD and LED signs.

Sonoma County, CA Recovery Support Centers seek equitable response to winter storms
Sonoma County and non-profit network COAD evaluated communities most impacted by the storms when selecting center locations. 211 Sonoma County assists residents in determining their eligibility through a system first tested early in the COVID-19 pandemic. County officials are focusing on marginalized populations with limited access to disaster assistance and financial aid. The Recovery Support Center model mitigates inequitable aid distribution while quickly responding to resident needs.

Sonoma County. CA is piloting artificial intelligence software to improve wildfire response times
Sonoma County partnered with South Korea-based technology firm Alchera to use artificial intelligence software to alter fire dispatchers to the precise location of flames or smoke. The two-year pilot begins with fire dispatchers training the AI system to discern smoke from steam produced by the county's numerous geysers. When the AI system detects suspected wildfire smoke it will transmit an image to the dispatcher's camera which is expected to improve response times by up to an hour.

Sonoma County, CA builds Los Guilicos Village with short-term shelters for homeless residents
The 60-unit community moved homeless residents from the Joe Rodota Trail to a safer environment. Pallet's 64-square-foot shelters are assembled from seven pieces without tools. Each shelter includes a heating unit, bed, and storage. Los Guilicos Village serves residents with a dining tent, medical care, and free shuttle rides to service providers. The county works with St. Vincent de Paul on personalized plans for residents to find long-term housing.

Sonoma County, CA moves toward zero-emission transit fleet with its first electric bus
The bus seats 22 passengers and travels up to 137 miles per charge. Commuters access onboard Wi-Fi and USB chargers from their seats. Sonoma County Transit operates the all-electric bus on Route 42 through Sebastopol. The city and county subsidize free rides on this route. Sonoma County is working toward an all-electric bus fleet in line with California's goal of 100% zero-emission buses by 2040.
