Sonoma County, CA deploys bus stop signage with e-paper displays for improved commuter experiences

County officials sought low-cost, low-maintenance electrical signage for its transit stops. E-paper displays from Vix Technology were deployed at urban and rural stops throughout Sonoma County. Each sign presents routes served at the stop with arrival times updated by 4G and 5G LTE networks. Lithium-ion batteries provide three years of continuous power without the need for utility connections. This technology was approximately half the cost of previously used LCD and LED signs.

Sonoma County. CA is piloting artificial intelligence software to improve wildfire response times

Sonoma County partnered with South Korea-based technology firm Alchera to use artificial intelligence software to alter fire dispatchers to the precise location of flames or smoke. The two-year pilot begins with fire dispatchers training the AI system to discern smoke from steam produced by the county's numerous geysers. When the AI system detects suspected wildfire smoke it will transmit an image to the dispatcher's camera which is expected to improve response times by up to an hour.
